As a general rule, the top speed of a 50cc moped or scooter will be restricted to 30mph. However when looking at some of the most popular 50cc mopeds out there - many 50cc sit comfortably at the 28mph mark.

Once you have met the relevant licencing requirements, you will be able to derestrict your 50cc scooter or moped, then allowing you to surpass 40mph on most occasions. Derestricting is changing the category of your bike, and can only be done if 17 and over so always make sure to follow the correct procedure including informing your insurance company.

50cc mopeds are limited to 30mph largely due to the fact that once a person reaches 16 and has passed their CBT, they will legally be able to ride on UK roads independently. This speed restriction is a defining characteristic of the moped category.

Due to their power restrictions, it is illegal to go on the motorway when riding a 50cc. This is because to ride safely on a motorway you would need to exceed 30mph which is not possible on a restricted moped.

When it comes to 125cc scooters and motorcycles, these bikes are capable of reaching a top speed of around 60-70mph - double the power of a 50cc!

Thanks to their speed abilities, a 125cc bike is a far better choice for doing longer commutes and journeys than the 50cc, which is ideal for those living within a city or just needing a two-wheeler to pop to the shops on. The only downside of a 125cc is that - you do have to be over the age of 17.
