Campervans are a great option for couples, those with smaller families, or even those who are wanting to dip their toes into the van life experience. In comparison to motorhomes, you can pick up a great campervan for far less making them ideal for those with a smaller or limited budget.
So without further ado, in this blog, we will cover just 10 of the best-used campervans put there on the market for under £40,000…
Let’s get into it, shall we?
1. Bilbo VW T5 Celex
Kicking off the list today we have the Bilbo Celex.
Bilbo’s motorhomes, the British camper conversion company, have been around since 1977, built their motorhomes and campervans with a passion for touring in mind.
Built on a VW T5 chassis, the Celex comes equipped with a side kitchen, rear seating that converts into a large double bed (as well as the option for another bed in the pop-top roof), plenty of nifty storage spaces, and even a rear wardrobe! - The Celex also comes with the beauty of an optional toilet, so if that is something that you deem a requirement, then you’re in for a treat.
When it comes to the kitchen, the Celex also includes a 65ltr compressor fridge with freezer compartment, 2-burner hob, sink, warming oven/grill, fresh & waste water tanks, leisure battery, mains hook up, and storage drawers with a cutlery tray.
It goes without saying that the VW camper may be one of the most iconic and well-loved campers about and for a 2013 model of the Celex, you will find yourself looking at a pricetag roughly around £34,950, however with the number of goodies packed into the Celex’s 4.9m exterior, I would 110% argue it is worth it.

2. Ford Transit Custom Nugget
Sitting second on the list, we here have the Ford Transit Nugget.
It is no surprise that many campervan creators use the popular Ford Transit Custom van chassis, and in this case, the Nugget is converted via the well-known and reliable motorhome manufacturer, Westfalia.
In the Nugget's 5.34m interior, Westfalia has managed to squeeze a three-area layout into the Nugget, including a kitchen area separated from the rear seating, and depending on which model you chose, an option for another double bed in the pop-top roof.
In terms of pricing for a 2018 model, you will be looking at a price of around £27,500 - an investment arguably worth every penny!

3. Swift Select
In at third is the Swift Select, based on a Fiat chassis with a 2.3 litre 130hp engine.
The Select packs one of Swift’s most popular layouts found on larger motorhomes into its 6-metre interior. Coming equipped with a large lounge space at the front, a kitchen, plenty of storage space, a fixed double bed, and even a full washroom! - which is a rarity in most campervans!
An added bonus is the Select comes with some pretty nifty extras all as standard including solar panels, a wind-out canopy, a full air conditioning system, cruise control, central locking, and lastly reversing camera and sensors.
On average, a 2017 model of the Swift Select will look to take you back around £39,999.

4. Hillside Leisure VW Doveridge
Fourth spot on this list today goes to the Hillside Leisure VW Doveridge, the ideal multi-purpose motorhome.
Built on a VW Transporter chassis, the Doveridge combines its good looks and practicality, coming packed with a front seating area for four, two rear seats that convert into two single beds, and a fully equipped kitchen, as well as plenty of storage space and a cassette toilet.
However, the extras don’t stop there. This VW model also comes with electric windows and mirrors, a tow bar, and a roll-out awning, creating extra floor space outside - The equipment levels are impressive for such a compact van.
Lastly, if you’re looking at purchasing your very own Doveridge, for a 2012 model you will be looking at on average a £31,995 price tag, making this one of the cheaper alternatives on this list!

5. Mercedes Benz Vito
Taking the fifth spot is the Mercedes Benz Vito.
The Mercedes Benz Vito is a camper sitting in the same category as the VW Transporter or the Vauxhall Vivaro (both included in this list), but the Vito is slightly smaller yet packs a good punch of power and a great camping experience.
Built on the trusty Mercedes Benz chassis and powered by the 114 CDI Blue Tec Van 2.1 engine, the Vito comes equipped with a rock and roll bed, plenty of storage space, and a fully-equipped kitchen area with a hob, a sink, and a fridge making sure you have the ability to be fully self-sufficient.
Complete Campers Southwest converts a lot of the Mercedes Benz Vito campers, and you can pick yourself up a 2015 model for around £30,000.

6. Vauxhall Vivaro Elite (Wellhouse Leisure)
In the sixth spot, we have the Vauxhall Vivaro Elite – arguably the ideal first campervan.
Built on a Vauxhall chassis, the Vivaro conversions are carried out by Wellhouse Leisure and pack a lot into its 4.98-metre exterior. Coming equipped with a rock-and-roll bed, and a full side kitchen. You can also choose the Vivaro option with a pop-top roof, which allows room for a double bed.
However the spec doesn't stop there, this camper also comes packed with 17-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors and a rear parking camera, semi-adaptive cruise control, and Vauxhall’s Multimedia Navi Pro system all as standard.
One of the downsides of the Vivaro however is the fact it does not come with the option of a toilet, so if this is one of your necessities, the Vivaro might not be the one for you.
The Vivaro will cost you around £20,000 for a 2015 model, making this one of the most affordable options on this list for those with a smaller budget or those who are wanting to get their foot in the door of campervan life.

7. Auto Trail Tribute
Taking the seventh spot has got to be the Autotrail Tribute.
Autotrail is a popular campervan and motorhome manufacturer in the UK, so it is no wonder that the Tribute has earned a worthy spot on our top 10. Based on a Fiat Ducato chassis, the Tribute comes packed with double bunk beds in the rear, a fully equipped washroom, a side kitchen, and a spacious living area.
When it comes to pricing, for a 2012 model you will be looking at anything around the £39,000 mark - So you’ll definitely be paying the extra cash for the extra room.

Autohaus has been manufacturing luxury campervan conversions for over 27 years and has grown into one of the UK’s leading manufacturers for conversions, hence its excellent position on our list today.
Perfect campervan for daily use with the family, weekend trips, and longer holidays, the Spartan is based on a short wheelbase (SWB) Volkswagen T5, the Spartan comes packed with an elevating roof, a rock-and-roll seat bed and a side kitchen equipped with a combination single hob and sink and a 50ltr fridge freezer.
Lastly, for a 2012 model, it will cost you on average around £36,995 so while it may be one of the more expensive campers on this list, I’d argue it's worth it!

9. Autocruise Rhythm
Taking one of the last spots on this list has got to be the Autocruise Rhythm.
Built upon a Peugeot boxer chassis, the Rhythm fits a lot into its 6-metre exterior such as a fully-fledged washroom and kitchen including a hob, grill, oven, microwave, and fridge.
One of my favourite things about the Rhythm has got to be its layout thanks to the large and spacious lounge in the rear (that also converts into two single beds or one large double depending on what you prefer) - a layout that has proved to be very popular.
For a 2013 model of the Autocruise Rhythm, you will be looking at an estimate of £39,000, however much like a few others on this list, you are paying that extra bit of cash for that extra space.

However it doesn’t stop there, the Greenline also comes with some pretty decent spec including central heating provided by a Webasto Diesel heater, a roll-out side awning, 12v lighting, a sunroof, an immobiliser, and much much more.
